Limiting access to lyrics

According to TechCrunch, Spotify has its lyrics feature behind a "paywall" to urge free users to pay for its services.

There have been users expressing their frustration on Reddit regarding the issue.

While the company has yet to release an official statement, Spotify told TechCrunch that its "features can vary over time, between markets and across devices."

The response indicates the change to lyrics may be more than just a test but that Spotify isn’t yet prepared to make an official announcement about affected markets, the report read.

Prior to this, Spotify had limited free users from accessing the lyrics feature. Those trying to access this would see the message “Enjoy lyrics on Spotify Premium.”

A company spokesperson then clarified that the changes were "only a test" with a limited number of users in a "pair of markets."

Spotify has yet to put access to lyrics as a premium feature based on its subscription plans.

Meanwhile, according to an X post by Dexerto, free users see this message when accessing lyrics. It says tapping the "Show lyrics" will count towards their limit. To gain full access, they need to upgrade their account.

Spotify didn't offer any more detail about why it’s now paywalling lyrics, but clearly, it’s a bid to push more people to its paid tier, the report said.

The company’s latest report said it has reached more than 600 million monthly active users, and paid subscribers were up to 236 million+, representing 15 percent year-over-year growth.

What do you think about this?
