PH score up 14 percent

According to the International Telecommunication Union's ICT Development Index 2024, the Philippines scored 74.4, a significant 14 percent improvement from last year's 65.0.

However, the country's score is behind the global average of 74.8, as well as Southeast Asian neighbors like Singapore (97.8), Malaysia (95.0), and Thailand (91.0).

The Philippines was also among the lowest five in the region, besting only Cambodia (72.6), Laos (65.3), Myanmar (63.8), and Timor-Leste (39.2).

We are optimistic that we can score even higher in the global ICT Development Index. This should serve as an impetus for all stakeholders, including industry players and the government, to work more closely to address persistent gaps in our connectivity infrastructure, Globe President and CEO Ernest Cu said in a statement.

The latest ICT index covered 170 economies. Generally, it showed progress towards universal and meaningful connectivity, defined as the ability for everyone to go online under optimal conditions, at an affordable cost, anywhere, and anytime they need.

More than half of the economies included in the study are past the 80-point mark showing that the world is well advanced on its way to universal and meaningful connectivity. However, disparities prevail with the lowest IDI score at 21.3 out of 100, and 29 economies score below the 50-point mark.

Low-income economies showed the largest improvement, with the group averaging an IDI score of 36.2, up 13.7 percent from the previous edition. The largest score increases were driven mainly by gains in internet use, mobile broadband penetration, and affordability.

In contrast, high-income economies saw a score increase of only 1.4 percent, largely because their average score is 91.7, leaving much less room for improvement.
