The minister continued and said that Apple's certificate or TKDN for domestic product usage had expired and had to be extended for the Cupertino-based company to sell its products in the country.

TKDN refers to the quality of domestic components in a good or service. To obtain this certification, Apple Products must meet the Domestic Component Level Value requirement of at least 40 percent.

"The iPhone 16 mobile phone from Apple has not been able to enter the Indonesian market, because it is still under the checking process of the minimum requirement for local products usage. That is one of the requirements for importing the mobile phone," Kartasasmita said in Jakarta.

Mr. Argus also said that Apple must also comply with investment commitments in the country as part of the country's local content requirement certification. The company was only able to provide IDR 1.48 Trillion (around PHP 5.5 Billion) which is short of its commitment of IDR 1.71 Trillion. (around PHP 7.1 Billion).

If Apple fulfils its investment commitment, the Indonesian government will allow the highly anticipated iPhone 16 series to be sold locally.

CNA reports that Apple can meet the conditions in three ways. First is the local manufacturing scheme. This means that the product has to be produced within the country. Second is the local application scheme which involves the development of applications domestically and third, is the innovation development scheme which focuses on the creation of innovative products within the country.

According to the Jakarta Globe, Apple opted for the innovation development scheme to attain the required TKDN certification.

Apple has established three Apple Academies in Tangerang, Sidoarjo and Batam. During Tim Cook's visit in April this year, the company shared plans to open a fourth academy in Bali.
