We all know the feeling—taking what you think is the perfect Instagram photo, only to have it photobombed by your sibling, or maybe an unwanted mess on your food plate that totally ruins the aesthetic.
OPPO Reno12 5G's AI Eraser 2.0 doing wonders

For non-techies, the idea of using an AI eraser on a phone is both exciting and, to be honest, it might be a bit intimidating. Will it work like magic, or will it leave my IG pic looking like a bad Photoshop job?

Can OPPO Reno12 5G's AI Eraser 2.0 compete with those of PHP 100K phones?

To find out, I tested the OPPO AI Eraser 2.0 on the OPPO Reno12 5G (PHP 24,999 SRP), and compared it to a much pricier flagship phone that costs over 100,000 pesos. For this experiment, I used both phones to erase certain details that would test their AI capabilities.

Experiment #1: The Photobombing Sibling

We've all been there—taking a cute selfie, only to have a sibling pop up in the background (or worse, give you those annoying "bunny ears"). So I tested the OPPO Reno12 5G's AI Eraser 2.0 in this very situation.

With OPPO Reno12 5G: The "REMOVE PEOPLE" feature was a lifesaver! The AI instantly recognized my brother as an intruder and did most of the work for me, automatically selecting him for removal. I had to manually select the bunny ears though, but overall, it saved me a lot of time with its intelligent detection.

With the PHP 100K phone: The phone's native lasso tool was equally impressive, allowing me to outline my brother—even with an imperfect trace—and add the bunny ears in one go. With a single click, both were erased.

Our thoughts - Both phones did an excellent job of replacing my brother with a clean, realistic background. OPPO Reno12 5G’s AI auto-detection gave it an edge in terms of ease and time-saving, though the PHP 100K phone's native lasso tool made the process a bit more seamless for bulk selections.

Experiment #2: The design dilemma

Next, I imagined a scenario where I no longer stan one of my favorite girl groups, XG (not gonna happen, btw!). So, I tested something trickier: erasing a Thailand-style bootleg shirt featuring a collage of all seven XG members. Could these phones handle complex designs?

With OPPO Reno12 5G: I tried the "REMOVE PEOPLE" feature first, hoping the AI would recognize the image of the seven XG members on my shirt as real people, but no luck there.

I moved on to the Smart Lasso tool, which couldn't detect the entire design as one object. Finally, I used the Paint Over tool to manually erase the design piece by piece. The result was decent but honestly, it required some patience—there were still leftover traces of the design that I had to clean up.

With the PHP 100K phone: The PHP 100K phone's native lasso tool quickly outlined the whole shirt, and in just one click, it generated a new, completely black shirt—wrinkles and all! The AI even fixed a portion of my arm that got selected by accident. It was faster and cleaner compared to the Reno12 5G, no doubt.

The PHP 100K phone's AI wins in terms of speed and precision here, handling the complex design with ease. OPPO Reno12 5G, while still doing the job, required a bit more patience and manual work. But for casual use, the Reno12’s AI tool is perfectly fine if you have a little more time to spare.

Experiment #3: The cheeseburger clean-up

As a millennial, it is my duty to let my Instagram followers know what I am having for lunch in real-time. So, I put both phones' AI erasers to the test with a photo of my favorite cheeseburger. The goal: was to tidy up my burger photo by removing stray meat morsels that ruined the aesthetic.

With OPPO Reno12 5G: The Paint Over tool easily highlighted and erased the unwanted burger morsel. It copied the design of the tray liner seamlessly, and within seconds, I had a clean, Instagram-ready burger pic.

With the Php 100K phone: Surprisingly, the PHP 100K phone struggled a bit here. The AI couldn’t quite differentiate between the burger morsel and the tray liner, and after several attempts, I gave up. The result was okay for a casual Instagram post, but food bloggers or perfectionists might be less than satisfied.

The OPPO Reno12 5G wins this round hands down! It handled the food photography clean-up quickly and accurately, proving that the OPPO AI Eraser 2.0 can actually compete with other flagship phones.

Our thoughts

In the end, the OPPO Reno12 5G proved to be a solid contender when it comes to AI eraser features. Sure, it might not be as lightning-fast or precise as a phone costing five times as much in certain situations, but for everyday users like me, it gets the job done.

For quick fixes, like removing photobombers or tidying up food pics, the OPPO Reno12 5G's AI Eraser 2.0 is more than capable—and it comes at a fraction of the cost.

For more complex edits, such as erasing intricate designs, it does require some patience and manual work, but that’s a small price to pay (literally and figuratively).

So, if you're not looking to spend an arm and a leg on a flagship phone but still want some impressive AI photo-editing power, the OPPO Reno12 5G is a fantastic budget-friendly option.

You might just find that this mid-range phone has more than enough to offer for your everyday photography needs—without breaking the bank.

Anyway, you can get your OPPO AI phone from all authorized OPPO Stores nationwide or from OPPO's official e-commerce channels on Shopee, Lazada, and TikTok.
