xAI's Grok-2 now FREE to X users, gains advanced image generation and real-time information integration
Elon Musk's artificial intelligence company, xAI, has introduced several upgrades for its chatbot Grok-2, including free access to all X users.

Faster, smarter, and multi-lingual
Grok-2 and Grok-2 mini were originally introduced in August 2024. As of December 16, 2024, xAI claims that Grok-2 is now three times faster and should offer improved accuracy, instruction-following, and multi-lingual capabilities. The company states that it has added new features such as web search, citations, and the new image generation model Aurora. Aurora promises to bring a new level of photorealism to Grok's image generation.
Grok-2 is now integrated with the X platform which means that it can combine insights from X with real-time web searches to provide timely and accurate answers to inquiries. This means that Grok now draws upon posts from X and webpages from the broader internet. Which should allow for more current and contextually relevant responses.
The company also added new citation features to enhance the verifiability of information and explore sources in more detail.
Alongside is the introduced the new Grok Button. It is a feature that will appear on posts across your X home timeline. The button is designed to help users discover relevant context, understand real-time events and dive deeper into trend discussions.
Lastly, xAI released the public beta for their enterprise API along with preview models grok-beta and grok-vision-beta. Today, the company is adding two new models coming to their API called grok-2-1212 and grok-2-vision-1212. These models promise to bring improvements in accuracy, instruction-following and multi-lingual capabilities and offer a great option for developers looking for a highly steerable and intelligent model.
Grok is now free for everyone on X. It was previously limited to Premium and Premium+ subscribers. The FREE version comes with limitations such as 10 messages every 2 hours and three image analyses per day.
