No more fake goods in Greenhills soon?

The 2024 Review of Notorious Markets for Counterfeiting and Piracy said that "law enforcement authorities, in collaboration with right holders, have conducted raids at the mall".

To take action against those sellers, Greenhills Shopping Center has applied a three-strikes rule.

Moreover, the shopping center management has worked with rights holders and the government's National Committee on Intellectual Property Rights to transform Greenhills Shopping Center into a "high-end mall" with "legitimate sellers".

The government program includes efforts to rezoning the mall. They are also shifting the sellers to local products through incentives and premium locations in the mall.

Inquirer's report said that the said actions have been "welcomed by rights holders and have seen it as an opportunity to collaborate with government authorities and the management of Greenhills to remove counterfeit sellers.

A May 2024 report said that 80 percent of sellers have transitioned to selling local products including Halal items, jewelry, antiques, furniture pieces, and artworks.

A multi-year plan will also gradually move 100 percent of Greenhills merchants away from selling IP-infringing products by 2027.

To recap, the Greenhills Shopping Center is known as a counterfeit hub in the Philippines.

Despite these recent efforts, the shopping center remains popular on social media as a destination for buying fake goods. Right holders are reporting "high volumes of counterfeit items in "secret storerooms".

From January to September 2024, the National Committee on Intellectual Property Rights (NCIPR) recorded USD 617.8 million worth of counterfeit goods seized from ports of entry, physical markets, and warehouses.
