HUAWEI Mate XT Ultimate Design when fully unfolded |
The rise of tri-fold smartphones is coming?
After launching the Mate X in 2019 as one of the first commercially available foldable smartphones globally, HUAWEI never stopped innovating and did the previously unthinkable—a triple-display foldable that is as lightweight, thin, and durable as the now conventional dual-screen foldable. |
An innovative hinge design (HUAWEI Mate XT) |
This is way better than what other brands achieved with their tri-fold designs that are not feasible enough for mass production.
The HUAWEI Mate XT | ULTIMATE DESIGN is said to be the ideal foldable with large-screen efficiency and portability. HUAWEI claims that it is the pioneer in merging tablets, PCs, and smartphones into one which may change the way users use their phones.
HUAWEI Mate XT modes:
- Smartphone mode - When fully folded, it is a 6.4-inch smartphone with an FHD+ display. It is just as thick as an iPhone with a case at 12.8mm.
- Compact tablet mode - The first unfolding mode features a compact yet large 7.9-inch 2K screen. This is great reading and running two apps at the same time. It is 4.8mm thick in this mode.
- Regular tablet mode - When fully unfolded, the device expands into a 10.2-inch tablet with 3K resolution making it ideal for watching wide-screen content with its 16:11 aspect ratio. This is the mode that you can use for a PC-like experience if you have a separate keyboard. The handset is also remarkably super-thin when fully unfolded at just 3.6mm, the slimmest right now.
The reason behind this is the composite laminated Tiangong dual-hinge system that folds in opposite directions and allows it to fold into three screens. HUAWEI even claims that this increases its resistance impact by 30 percent compared to a conventional book-type foldable.
It also uses an OLED TPO panel with 240Hz touch response, 1440Hz PWM dimming, and a P3 wide color gamut.
It has a large UTG screen for the internal panel and a non-Newtonian fluid for the external panel.
Since its entry into the market, tech brands have focused on developing their own foldable devices. Samsung announced plans to launch its own tri-fold smartphone. Meanwhile, Apple is yet to launch its own foldable as developmental setbacks push its release to 2026 or even 2028.
Thanks to its bold innovation, experts predict that the Mate XT may drive even more software manufacturers to ride with this new foldable trend.
