ICYMI: Lenovo AI student phone unveiled with no social media and games

Lenovo has introduced the AI Student Phone in China, a stripped-down mobile device designed for students and marketed to their parents.

The phone is available in three color options: Orange-white, Pink, and Blue. It ships with a detachable lanyard for carrying. 

In form, it resembles a feature phone rather than a traditional smartphone, with a compact 1.83-inch touchscreen protected by impact-resistant Panda glass. 

The display supports handwriting input. Internally, the device runs on a 1,850mAh battery and connects via standard 4G networks, without requiring a specialized IoT SIM card, allowing for conventional voice and HD video calling.

Functionally, the phone omits games, web browsers, and social media apps in favor of AI-assisted learning tools, location tracking, and parental controls.

Its central feature is a physical AI button that activates a voice assistant, allowing children to ask general knowledge questions or seek help with homework by holding the button. The device also comes preloaded with an educational reference library covering math formulas and English vocabulary, intended to support schoolwork without providing open internet access.

For parents, the phone doubles as a monitoring tool. It uses GPS for real-time location tracking and supports geofencing, sending alerts to a parent's phone when the child enters or leaves designated areas such as school or home. 

A companion app lets parents block unknown callers, set schedules for when the phone can be powered on, and enable a "classroom mode" that, during school hours, restricts the phone to displaying the time and placing emergency SOS calls.

The device also includes a QR code-based mobile payment system, allowing children to make in-store purchases while parents set spending limits and monitor transactions through the app.
