Meet the MediaPad M5 lite

It is a portable tablet equipped with 10.1-inch FHD screen and a quad-speaker setup tuned by Harman Kardon. Harman Kardon is a well respected audio brand who manufactures home and car audio equipment.

Aside from being a multimedia-centric tablet, the MediaPad M5 Lite can also help you in your work, school, and more. It even has M-Pen lite stylus to let your write notes and even draw in your tablet.

For the asking price of PHP 18,990, it has the potential to be one of those tablets to get for its purpose.

Let's have a look!

The tablet arrived with a big clean white box with the 5V/2A USB wall charger, USB Type-A to USB Type-C data/charging cable, and a SIM ejector tool.

Fortunately, the M5 lite that we got is also the model with an M-Pen lite stylus.

Build Quality/Design

Metal body!
Metal body!

The tablet arrived with a premium metal unibody build with nice curves. It also has a 2.5D curved glass to cover its 10.1-inch IPS FHD screen.

It feels like a high-end device. There's no mention of glass protection from Gorilla Glass and etc. though. It has no resistance against water splash as well.

To my eyes, it is an elegantly designed tablet with minimalist curves and a sleek looking overall profile. Bezels are thick, though it is considered as decent for a mid-range tablet. The black borders are also there to help you hold the tablet more comfortably.

The tablet measures at 243.4 x 162.2 mm. It is quite slim at 7.7 mm even if it has a big 7,500mAh of battery.

At the back, the metal back is nicely textured. It goes with a single camera with a slight hump.

In front, there's a selfie camera on the upper part and a fingerprint scanner at below the screen.

You can use the tablet in landscape or portrait mode. In landscape mode, it has two speakers on the top. It also has four microphone holes in the middle of the two speakers there.

Below, you will find two more speakers. On the left, you will see the microSD card tray hole (no SIM slot) and at right you will find the volume keys.

Again, the tablet has great curves. But, it will be a bit hard for one-handed use. It is more suitable for two-handed operation.

Like most phones/tablets, it is also a bit slippery to hold. So, it will be better if your grip is a bit tight and you will be careful with it.

Initial findings

Sturdy metal back
Sturdy metal back

1. It looks premium and it feels premium which is a great thing. The screen is 10.1-inch big with FHD resolution which should be great for your viewing pleasure. So far I find its picture quality to be great for viewing your favorite content and watching videos.

It even has the ClariVu technology with 5 enhanced eye-comfort modes like the Optimal Distance Reminder, Posture Guidance, Intelligent Light Adjustment, Blue Ray Filter and Usage Time Control.

2. The MediaPad M5 lite has an upgraded Kirin 659 octa-core CPU coming from the Kirin 950 of the MediaPad M3 last year. But the Mali-T830 GPU of this tablet is considered as weaker versus the Mali-T880 MP4 of the M3.

It still has 4GB RAM, but the storage is now bigger at 64GB. It is also expandable via microSD card up to 256GB.

The battery is also HUGE. It features a 7,500mAh battery with 9V/2A fast charging. It can fully charge the tablet in 2 hours and 54 minutes.

3. It is one of the few tablets with Android 8.0 Oreo with EMUI 8.0 skin. It looks similar to the UI of smartphones with EMUI skin. There is an option where you can use the mode with no app drawer and with app drawer. It has few pre-installed apps though most of them are uninstallable.
Decent cameras?

4. This tablet has a pair of 8MP f/2.0 sensors. It has autofocus at the back and fixed-focus lens in front. What we like is the back camera goes with a lot of features found on Huawei smartphones. It even has a pro mode and light painting mode.

5. This tablet has an LED notification beside the selfie camera. As expected, the fingerprint scanner is blazing fast. The audio quality is superb so far. It has one of the loudest and fullest audio I tested on a tablet yet. The pen could be useful if you like to write and draw a lot. It is quite responsive so far.
