Meet OnePlus 7 Pro

It's a handset that promises to "Go Beyond Speed" due to its notchless all-screen design, the highest-rated display in the market yet, top-of-the-line-specs, powerful triple-cameras, and more for less.

In particular, it is the first OnePlus phone packed with a notchless 2K AMOLED screen, pop-up cameras, new-generation In-Display fingerprints scanner, 7nm Snapdragon 855 chip, 4,000mAh battery, triple cameras, and stereo speakers.

Now, let's see if this handset is as great as it is on paper.

Unboxing/Accessories

The box
The box

OnePlus 7 Pro arrived with familiar white box with red print of the logo. Inside, it comes with the phone itself, 30W Warp Charge plug, USB-A to USB-C cable, SIM ejector tool, and clear/flexible TPU case.

We also noticed that it has a pre-installed screen protector. Nice! You will also see the usual paper documents inside.

Like other OnePlus phones, it won't come earphones right off the bat. It would have been better if it has a USB-C to 3.5mm dongle as well.

Build Quality/Design

Neat glass back
Neat glass back

Like most high-end phones today, the OnePlus 7 Pro uses a sandwich metal and glass materials. It feels premium and durable at the same time. It even has Corning's toughest Gorilla Glass 6 glass protection against drops and hairline scratches.

Premium materials, some sort of water resistance

However, it still doesn't have an IP rating for water and dust resistance. In Twitter, OnePlus claimed that it still has some sort of water resistance. It even has a red rubber ring for water resistance found in the SIM tray and pop-up cam. However, OnePlus makes no guarantees regarding its water resistance.

Moving to the pop-up cam, OnePlus said that it has been tested it for over 300,000 times for durability. Basically, it can last for over five and a half years if you will open the the cam 150 times per day.

The pop-up camera automatically retracts when dropped to protect it against damage too.

Quite impressive if true!

Design-wise, it is the prettiest OnePlus for me. The 3D curved back design is super neat and the paint finish they used is simply stunning. It comes in nebula blue, mirror gray, and almond color options as well.

We also like that its vertically-aligned triple-camera setup aren't that protruded. The hump is not huge. The chrome painted OnePlus logo is quite attractive for me too.
With In-Screen fingerprint sensor
With In-Screen fingerprint sensor

In front, it has the largest display found on any OnePlus device yet. It rocks a 6.67-inch panel with ultra-slim bezels on the side and top. Impressively, the company also added a super-slim speaker/earspeaker on top of the screen.

The chin bezel is also smaller than what we saw from Galaxy S10+ and P30 Pro. Only the iPhone XS has a slightly smaller chin.

We are impressed that it comes with a slightly larger In-Display fingerprint reader in the display compared with the competition as well.

The result? Its 19:5:9 screen has an impressive 93 percent screen-to-body ratio! It also made the phone not that big at 162.6 x 75.9 x 8.8 mm despite having a huge 6.67-inch panel.

At left, you will see the volume rocker. The power button and the silent/vibrate/ring key are located at the right side of the phone.

You will also find the neatly hidden antenna lines on the sides of the OnePlus 7 Pro.

Overall, OnePlus 7 Pro is a well-machined phone with great ergonomics. It isn't that slippery to hold as well. It is just a bit prone to fingerprint smudges. Using it with one hand is a bit hard unless you are Kawhi Leonard.

It's a bit heavy at 206 grams.

Initial findings

Ultra-impressive screen
Ultra-impressive screen

1. Undeniably, it has the most impressive display found on any phone yet. Yes, even against the Dynamic AMOLED of the Galaxy S10+.

Best screen in the market yet for me!

The 90Hz refresh rate is no joke. It is super smooth and you can really feel the difference against other phones with lower-end type of screens.
Strong scores!
Strong scores!

2. This is also one of the most powerful in the market yet. It runs with the monster 7nm 2.84GHz 64-bit Snapdragon 855 octa-core processor with Adreno 640 GPU that can run any apps with ease. It also goes with up to 12GB LPDDR4X RAM and up to 256GB of UFS 3.0 storage.

You read that part right, has the UFS 3.0 tech with sequential speed of read and write compared to UFS 2.1. It is one of the first phones with UFS 3.0 tech.

OnePlus also claimed that it goes with 10-layer cooling system that should help with heat dissipation for consistent performance.

Moreover, this device comes with a 4,000mAh battery with super-fast 30W Warp Charge 30 tech. It isn't as fast the 50W VOOC charging, but 30W is still crazy fast.

It makes up for the lack of wireless charging. There's a 4G LTE Cat 20 connectivity option as well. OnePlus will also make a 5G version of this phone. But it is not here yet.

3. The UI is amazing as expected. It uses the new Oxygen OS based on Android 9.0 Pie. It is buttery smooth and the icons look modern and neat. It doesn't look cluttered at all and bloatware are almost non-existent. It comes with easy to use gestures and a lot of other features. So far, it is the smoothest phone that we ever tested yet.

4. At the back, it goes with the 48MP f/1.6 Sony IMX586 with OIS + 16MP f/2.2 117-degree ultra wide-angle + 8MP 3x telephoto sensor with OIS. The cameras are paired with PDAF, CAF, Laser AF, and LED flash. For selfies, you'll find a 16MP f/2.0 sensor.

By the way, it is the first with an f/1.6 lens on a 48MP sensor. The Nightscape mode is amazing as well. It has the best cameras on a OnePlus yet. The 3x zoom is impressive. The ultra-wide camera is a bit soft though.

5. The In-Display fingerprint sensor is the fastest around! The haptic vibration motor works in some games. It doesn't have a 3.5 mm headphone jack slot, but it has a stereo speaker setup. It also comes with most of the features found on other high-end phones.

As of the moment

The build is flagship-worthy, it has the best screen on any phone yet, the In-Display fingerprint scanner is super fast, the specs are monster-grade, the cameras are better than any OnePlus phone yet, and the few weaknesses are forgivable.

Okay! OnePlus 7 Pro is the most impressive phone in the market yet for me.

But, It'll reserve my judgment until the price is out. See you in our full review!

This phone will be available in the Philippines via Digital Walker around the first week of June 2019.
