Can Nokia compete with OPPO?

Build / Design - Nokia 8.1 has a relatively dated design with a HUGE notch upfront. It also has slim bezels and chin. The OPPO F11 Pro sports a more updated design with a fullscreen display and a motorized pop-up selfie camera.

Both come with a fingerprint scanner behind instead of an In-Display fingerprint scanner.

Display - Nokia 8.1 sports a 6.18-inch 2.5D curved IPS screen with 2246 x 1080 FHD+ resolution at 403 ppi pixel density. OPPO F11 Pro has a 6.53-inch IPS screen with 2340 x 1080 FHD+ resolution and 395 ppi pixel density. It also has an unspecified Corning Gorilla Glass protection.

F11 Pro has a taller, notch-less screen but Nokia 8.1 has DCI-P3 and HDR10 support. OPPO also has an unspecified level of Corning Gorilla Glass protection.

Specs - In terms of performance, the Nokia 8.1 has a 2.2GHz 64-bit Snapdragon 710 octa-core processor, Adreno 616 GPU, 6GB LPDDR4X RAM, 128GB storage and a 3,500MAh battery with 18W fast charging.

The F11 Pro has a 2.1GHz Helio P70 octa-core processor with dual-core AI, Mali-G72 MP3, 6GB RAM, 64GB expandable storage, and a 4,000mAh battery with VOOC 3.0 flash charge.

Nokia 8.1 has a faster CPU and GPU combo. Both have 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. However, F11 Pro takes the lead in the battery department with a bigger cell and faster fast charging technology.

Both are also packed with 700MHz 4G LTE support.

Cameras - In terms of cameras, both are impressive. The Nokia 8.1 has a dual-camera setup with 12MP f/1.8 Sony IMX363 sensor with ZEISS optics, Dual PDAF, OIS, EIS + 13MP sensor and dual-tone LED flash. It also has a 20MP f/2.0 selfie camera.

OPPO F11 Pro has a dual rear camera setup with 48MP f/1.8 + 5MP f/2.4 with PDAF and LED flash.  For selfies, it has a 16MP f/2.0 with AI face beauty and screen flash.

On paper, the F11 Pro sounds more impressive due to the sheer size of its main sensor at 48MP. However, Nokia 8.1's dual-camera setup is supplemented with great features such as Dual PDAF, OIS, and EIS. The latter has a bigger selfie camera sensor as well.

Other features - Nokia 8.1 features a traditional fingerprint sensor, face unlock, a dedicated Google Assistant button, USB-C connection, Smart Amp, dual-mic with OZO Audio. OPPO F11 Pro has Dual Band WiFi and dual-mic.

Though both run Android 9.0 Pie, Nokia 8.1 is included in the Android One program. Android One ensures that Nokia 8.1 gets at least two years of Android OS upgrades, up to three years of monthly security updates, clean UI and no bloatware. OPPO F11 Pro sports a skinned version of Android 9.0 Pie with ColorOS 6.0.

Nokia 8.1 advantages - Display has DCI-P3 and HDR10 support, faster CPU and GPU, more camera features such as OIS, EIS, and dual PDAF, USB-C, Android One device
OPPO F11 Pro - Bigger screen with Gorilla Glass, 48MP main camera, larger battery with faster-charging tech, slightly cheaper

Our thoughts

Both Nokia 8.1 and OPPO F11 Pro are pretty good phones under PHP 20K. Nokia 8.1 might have the advantage in terms of screen technology, specs, and camera features though.

On the other hand, OPPO F11 Pro has a bigger main camera sensor, a bigger battery, faster charging, and a more affordable price tag.
