Budget flagship battle!

Premium phones!
Premium phones!

Build Quality/Design - For the materials used, both highlight premium looking builds and designs for the price. Mi 9T Pro highlights the 3D curved glass back with Gorilla Glass 5 protection and flame-like patterns. There is also an option for a stunning pearl white edition.

In front, it has no notch since it is equipped with a pop-up camera module. The front panel has Gorilla Glass 5 protection as well.

Nova 5T, on the other hand, is more compact. It uses a 2.5D curved glass back. There is an option for the stunning midsummer purple colorway that different shines depending on the lighting. In front, it uses a screen with punch-hole.

Some may prefer the punch-hole, some may like the all-screen design better.

Both are premium for the price. But, the advantage goes to Xiaomi since it has Gorilla Glass protection.

By the way, Mi 9T Pro has a headphone jack slot as well.

Display - The advantage on paper here goes to the Mi 9T Pro since it has a larger 6.39-inch display and its display is AMOLED with punchier colors, better contrast, and deeper blacks.

Nova 5T might appeal those in need of a slightly smaller 6.26-inch display and wants the punch-hole design. Its IPS panel is quite good as well. It has a wide color gamut of 96 percent NTSC.

Specs - Both are super powerful for the price. The advantage based on benchmark scores is with Mi 9T Pro. Snapdragon 855 is faster on paper against Kirin 980.

The RAM advantage is with Nova 5T since it has 8GB LPDDR4X by default. It should help the phone enjoy consistent speeds even while opening a LOT of apps.

The default 128GB storage of Nova 5T is larger as well if you will opt for the PHP 18,990 Mi 9T Pro with 6GB RAM/64GB storage.

The battery and charging advantage is with Mi 9T Pro. 4,000mAh is larger than 3,750mAh. 27W is faster than 22.5W.

In real-life, both will perform very well. Both can play any games on Android at max settings as well.

Cameras - The two phones are loaded with powerful cameras for the price. They have similar 48MP Sony IMX586 primary cameras, but the slight advantage might go to Mi 9T Pro as it has an f/1.75 aperture that is a bit brighter than f/1.8 of Nova 5T.

But, Nova 5T has more cameras at the back. It has a quad-camera system with 8MP f/1.8 Sony IMX586 w/ PDAF, CAF + 16MP f/2.2 ultra wide-angle sensor + 2MP f/2.4 4cm macro + 2MP f/2.4 depth sensor.

It has the better camera app with more modes and the better Pro mode with ISO 102400 as well.

Mi 9T Pro has a 48MP f/1.75 Sony IMX586 sensor w/ PDAF, CAF + 13MP f/2.4 w/ 124.8-degree ultra wide-angle sensor + 8MP f/2.4 2x telephoto sensor.

The selfie advantage is with Nova 5T with 32MP f/2.0 snapper vs 20MP f/2.0 of Xiaomi.

For videos, I won't be surprised if they have a similar performance. Both can shoot ultra-wide videos as well.

Other featuresThe connectivity options of Nova 5T is slightly better. It has WiFi 802.11a/b/g/n/ac (2.4/5GHz), 4G LTE Cat 21, Bluetooth 5.0, OTG, NFC, GPS (L1 + L5 dual-band), A-GPS, GLONASS, BeiDou, Galileo (E1 + E5a dual-band), QZZS (L1 + L5 dual-band), and dual SIM (hybrid).

Mi 9T Pro has the more modern 7th generation In-Display fingerprint reader.  The Nova 5T with side-mounted fingerprint scanner has faster unlocking speeds, but the placement is a bit awkward for me.

Mi 9T Pro also has 8-layer graphite cooling system, Qualcomm WCD9375 HiFi audio chip, and P2i water splash resistance.

Xiaomi Mi 9T Pro advantages - Splash resistance, larger AMOLED display, slightly faster SD855 chip, bigger 4,000mAh battery with faster charging, headphone jack slot, HiFi chip
Huawei Nova 5T advantages - More RAM, larger storage for the same price, more versatile quad-camera system, 32MP selfie shooter, better connectivity options

Our thoughts

These two are the most talked-about phones for the price for a reason!

Xiaomi Mi 9T Pro and Huawei Nova 5T are two of the most powerful and feature-rich phones for the price.

For us, the slight overall advantage is with the Mi 9T Pro. However, Nova 5T is no slough.

To be honest, it could go either way depending on your preference.

Trust us, you cannot go wrong with both.
