The latest report only proved Smart's efforts to expand its network across the country. For the January-September period, Smart aggressively boosted the number of its 4G base stations by about 5,500 to end the quarter with 21,700.

The move also enhanced Smart's LTE (long term evolution) download speed in both rural and urban areas, posting download speeds reaching 8.8 megabits per second (Mbps) and 10.5 Mbps, respectively, during the covered period.

According to OpenSignal, Smart took the lead in the National Capital Region and in both rural and urban areas in Ilocos, Central Luzon, Cagayan, Davao, Northern Mindanao, SOCCSKSARGEN, Western Visayas, and Central Visayas.

Smart users' faster speeds made it untouchable in ten urban regions, including the National Capital Region, where our users on Smart benefited from an impressive 15.2 Mbps, an enviable 5.6 Mbps faster than the speeds our Globe users saw in the capital, Opensignal said.

Globe, meanwhile, recorded slower download speeds of 6.2 Mbps in rural areas, and 7.8 Mbps in urban areas.
