NPC deems Grab PH's system invasive to passenger's privacy

The NPC puts Grab PH's selfie verification as well as the pilot test of audio and video recording during rides on hold as it is deemed to be a risk to passengers' privacy rights. The NPC released a statement saying that it has issued a Cease and Desist Order to Grab PH due to deficiencies found in complying with the Data Privacy Act of 2012.

Here is how the three systems work. First, Grab added a passenger verification via selfie as a security feature. If the passenger cannot take a selfie, the only way to verify identity is by adding a credit or debit card.

January 13 saw Grab roll out in-car audio and video recording as a security feature to assist incident prevention and dispute resolution. This pilot program was scheduled to run for 2 to 6 weeks with over 180 GabCar vehicles. 90 cars will have in-car cameras while the other 90 has in-car audio recording.

Grab also said that passengers are notified via GrabChat in advance if the vehicle booked is involved in the pilot test. They are allowed to cancel the booking without penalty.

Grab assured that audio and video recording would be encrypted and stored in Grab's database for 7 days and 10 hours respectively. It only accessible by authorized Grab representatives when in need of an incident investigation.
