In a surprise move, newly elected US President Biden revealed that it will temporarily halt and review the ban on TikTok and WeChat apps.
Biden's administration said that it will review the reasons why Trump banned the Chinese messaging app and decide whether the prohibition was warranted. The possible WeChat ban faced widespread criticism last year because the platform, the most popular app in China, is a crucial tool for the Chinese diaspora to keep in touch wiht family and friends in mainland China.
Meanwhile, for TikTok, Biden's administration said that it will review Trump's effort to ban the popular video-sharing app and pause a deal forcing its sale to the US-based companies Oracle and Walmart.
To recap, Trump's ban on Wechat and other Chinese-owned apps was apart of the previous admin's fight against Chinese dominance in the global tech industry.
Trump's admin noted that WeChat and TikTok are national security threats because they could be forced to give the Chinese government data on US users.
TikTikTok denied the allegations. Tencent said that all content shared among international users of WeChat is private.
