Netflix has no chill against cross-household account sharing

Netflix says that the main reason for this feature is to clamp down on stolen accounts. However, this will also affect people who share their passwords with their loved ones who leave separately from them.

Users have already received notifications that ask them to verify if they share the same household/address with the account holder. According to reports, the message states "If you don't live with the owner of this account, you need your own account to keep watching."

Users are then asked to verify a code texted or emailed to the account owner to continue. Netflix stated that hundreds of tests like these are done every year with customers on this issue. It is more of a crackdown on stolen passwords or accounts more than password sharing.

Spotify has a similar feature with its Family Plan which requires each user to have the same address as the main account holder. Otherwise, you are booted from the plan.

This could be a good feature to have for Netflix especially if you happen to have some old roommates or friends that are using your account secretly.
