Jupiter submarine cable operational by end-2021
The telco said that while the infrastructure's completion has been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, the submarine cable system will be up and running by December.
This will give a boost to address the strong demand for fixed and mobile services.
PLDT continues to work with major Asian carriers and OTT (over-the-top) players for the implementation of the new Jupiter cable system to support the expected new fixed and mobile services requirements, the group said in its annual report issued earlier last week.
The Jupiter cable system links landing points in Japan, the Philippines, and the United States.
It was in October 2017 when the dominant telco carrier bared that it would invest around PHP 7 billion in a Trans-Pacific cable system.
Jupiter is a fiber optic submarine cable system with a total length of approximately 14,000 kilometers that will employ wavelength selectable switch technology and which is being built based on the “open cable” model.
It can deliver a capacity of more than 60 terabytes per second from the Philippines to Japan and the US directly.
