According to the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor), DITO's move was part of its commitment to cover the whole Philippines after securing the status as the new major telco player, challenging dominant carriers Globe Telecom and PLDT.

DITO is mandated by RA 8627 to construct, establish, install, maintain and operate wire and/or wireless telecommunications systems in the Philippines, by improving the way Filipino experience connectivity with secure, fast and high value 4G and 5G technologies, the BuCor said in a statement.

The telco, backed by China Telecommunications and Davao's Dennis Uy, is also set to expand the deployment to cover all six other BuCor Operating Prison and Penal Farms.

Earlier, a memorandum of agreement was signed by BuCor Director General Gerald Q. Bantag and DITO Telecommunity Corporation chief technology officer, retired Armed Forces of the Philippines Maj. Gen. Rodolfo G. Santiago.

Last week, DITO said its mobile services are now accessible in 210 locations across the Philippines.

Almost five months after it rolled out its mobile services, DITO has now two million subscribers.
