OPPO aims to create its own smartphone chip

Creating a proprietary smartphone chip is becoming a focus for different smartphone manufacturers to reduce reliance on semiconductor suppliers like Qualcomm and MediaTek. Google introduced the Pixel 6 with its own Tensor mobile processor. Apple, Samsung, and Xiaomi are already developing theirs. Now, OPPO joins the race!

Developing in-house chips could also help soften the blow of the current widespread shortages and disruptions in said components. OPPO is looking to implement TSMC's 3nm chip technology following Apple and Intel's move.

In-house chips have staple for big smartphone companies like the A-series of mobile processors in Apple iPhones and the Kirin processors from Huawei. OPPO also hired top chip developers and AI experts from MediaTek, Qualcomm, and Huawei. This also means that the company aims to improve its AI algorithms to create its own custom Image Signal Processors.

OPPO did not reveal how much progress is made regarding developing its own chips but stated that its commitment remains to produce good products.
