vivo T1 5G Unboxing, First Impressions, Camera Samples

Last week, vivo Philippines introduced the T1 5G as its newest "Turbo" smartphone for gaming in the mid-range category in the country.
Meet vivo T1 5G

At just PHP 16,999, the vivo equipped this device with highly competitive specs for the first time in years in this price category.

In particular, the handset boasts a 6.44-inch 90Hz AMOLED screen, gaming capable 6nm Snapdragon 778G chip,

These specs could rival several slightly more expensive phones in the PHP 18K to around PHP 20K or a bit higher.

Is this the start of vivo's redemption arc in the mid-range smartphone category? Let's find out.

Unboxing/Accessories

The box

Unlike other vivo phones, the new T1 smartphone arrived in a white box with subtle vivo branding.

Inside, it is similar to most mid-range smartphone packaging. The device arrived with a secondary carton packaging containing the FREE clear case, SIM ejector tool, and paper documentation.

Underneath is the smartphone itself. On a closer inspection, you will see that it has a pre-installed screen protector.

Next, you will find the USB power brick rated at 66W and the USB-A to USB-C data/charging cable.

Apart from the phone, one thing that stood out in its packaging is the inclusion of a super-fast 66W charger. It isn't proprietary, unlike other brands.

There's one missing thing though. There are no stock earphones with a mic.

Build Quality/Design

Curved back with AG finish
Curved back with AG finish

Among all the new vivo smartphones, the vivo T1 5G is sporting one of the most unique-looking yet beautiful designs.

On the back, it is sporting a polycarbonate material with a curved design and AG finish. This is a non-fingerprint smudge magnet type of finish and it isn't that prone to hairline scratches as well.

Gorgeous back design, the front panel still has a notch...

It also has a large rectangular camera hump with 2 large circles housing the phone's triple camera configuration. Its bump also has one step lower with a glossy finish that houses the phone's dual-LED flash.

This back design is comfortable to hold and it is quite slim at just 8.49 mm.

My only minor concern here is it will wobble a little when tapped on a flat surface.

In front, the device is boasting a pretty large 6.44-inch AMOLED display with a 90Hz refresh rate and 1080p+ resolution. The device has slim bezels on the top and the sides with a slightly thicker chin.

The comment of most here is it still has a u-shaped notch instead of the more modern punch-hole design. There is no mention of any glass protection as well.

This is not a big deal for me as the display specs are still very good and immersive.

Plus, unlike other more expensive devices, it has an In-Display fingerprint reader in the center near the bottom part of its screen.

The frame of the device is also made with durable-looking hard plastic with chamfered edges.

On top, you will see a microphone hole.

Below, you will find the single loudspeaker, USB-C port, another mic, and the SIM card tray slot.

The SIM card tray slot has a red rubber ring which will likely protect the phone from light water splashes. One thing that we noticed here is there is no slot for a microSD card.

Let's admit it, even if the phone is designed for gaming, one of the things we usually check when getting a new one is the cameras.

At the back, the
vivo T1 5G is boasting a 64MP f/1.79 main shooter, 8MP f/2.2 117-degree ultra-wide-angle secondary camera, and a 2MP f/2.4 macro helper. For selfies, it has a single 16MP f/2.0 shooter.

Here are the first camera samples we took.

As you can see here, the vivo T1 is capable of taking good quality images in scenarios with good lighting. Most have a respectable amount of details and are close to natural colors. The Night mode using the main cam needs an improvement though as shots tend to be quite washed and grainy.

For Portrait selfies, it has beauty mode by default so we toned it down a little. Thankfully, the edge detection and background-to-subject separation rank among the best we've seen for the price.

We will be trying the rest of its camera features in our full review.

As of the moment

It can handle Genshin Impact at medium-high settings
It can handle Genshin Impact at medium-high settings

Compared to what the company released in this price range in the past years, the vivo T1 5G is the most impressive.

Bang-for-the-buck-worthy mid-range specs for the first time in years!

This device has a modern back design, great overall specs that could handle even some demanding games, and good overall performance so far. Even the battery life, charging speed, and thermals wowed us for a PHP 16,999 smartphone.

As of the moment, we think that this is the vivo smartphone that the company can pit against other bang-for-the-buck contenders in this price category.
