Globe Telecom is working to protect its network from typhoons and floods by shifting to an underground cabling system.
A "typhoon-proof" network soon?

Using an underground cabling system?

During a recent forum, a company executive said that Globe has started exploring ways to pursue this target as telco players suffer from strong winds and heavy rainfall, disrupting their services.

In December, a number of areas in Mindanao and the Visayas lost telco lines due to deadly Typhoon Odette.

One of the interesting things we’re doing now is seeing how we can typhoon-proof our network [by] moving our cables underground, Don Rae, senior advisor for Globe’s Enterprise Group, said at a virtual briefing.

For this year, the group is keeping its aggressive investments at PHP 89 billion to beef up its network with new cell sites and upgrades. Globe also intends to strengthen its 5G presence and the fiberization of Filipino homes across the country.

Just in the first quarter, Globe already spent PHP 21 billion in capital expenditure to address the rising demand for data amid the pandemic. In the period, it build 234 cell sites nationwide, upgraded 2,344 mobile sites to 4G, and installed 380 5G sites.

Globe earlier said that it is targeting to deploy about 1,700 new cell sites by the end-2022.

What do you guys think?
