Build/Design - The HONOR X9a 5G poses an elegant eye-catching design which for us gives a more high-end feel. It is also slim and surprisingly lightweight at 175g while the smaller dimensions could mean that it is easier to hold.

It also has Super Reinforced Glass which is durable and can withstand even the weight of cars going through it as well as the considerable height of a drop test.

The Samsung Galaxy A23 5G, it looks simpler but with a matte finish for those who prefer a less glossy back. We noticed it is heavier at 197g and has wider dimensions. There's also the usual Gorilla Glass 5 protection against drops and some scratches.

Display - When it comes to the screen, the HONOR X9a 5G uses a 6.67-inch FHD+ OLED panel with up 120Hz refresh rate, a 300Hz touch sampling rate for better response, 1920Hz PWM dimming, and even AI Anti Mistouch.

The Galaxy A23 5G on the other hand has a 6.6-inch IPS LCD w/ 120Hz instead while the resolution is the same at 2400 x 1080 at 400 ppi.

The 10-bit curved OLED is much better to look at versus a standard LCD, they both have the same smooth refresh rate and resolution however there's a 300Hz touch sampling rate and 1920Hz PWM dimming for HONOR, while the Samsung has higher pixel density since the display is slightly smaller.

Specs - In terms of performance, the HONOR X9a 5G uses a 2.2GHz 6nm Snapdragon 695 octa-core SoC w/ Adreno 619 GPU, 8GB of RAM, 256GB storage, 5,100mAh battery, and 40W HONOR Super Charge.

While the Galaxy A23 5G has a similar chipset but comes with different memory configurations of 4, 6, and 8GB of RAM and 64GB or 128GB storage. Its battery is slightly smaller at 5,000mAh while the charging speed is at 25W.

In this area, the HONOR X9a 5G seems to be the easier choice because while they have similar chipsets, you'll also get more RAM, storage, battery, and charging speed at a single price.

Samsung may offer lower memory configurations but you'll get less and if you go for higher 8GB RAM, still the storage, battery, and charging speed can't keep up with HONOR's offering while paying for more.

Cameras - The X9a 5G boasts 64MP f/1.8 primary sensor coupled with 5MP f/2.2 ultra-wide w/ depth sensor and another 2MP f/2.4 macro helper while for selfies, it has a 16MP f/2.45 sensor.

On the other side, the Galaxy A23 5G uses 50MP f/1.8 + 5MP f/2.2 ultra-wide-angle + 2MP f/2.4 macro + 2MP f/2.4 depth + LED flash while the front-facing shooter uses 8MP f/2.0.

In the camera department, the X9a 5G offers a higher resolution for the primary sensor while the accompanying cameras can function similarly to the A23 5G. But, it is worth pointing out that HONOR did it more "efficiently" as its 5MP ultra-wide sensor can also take depth-sensing shots. While Samsung may have 4 cameras it is just a waste of resources and adds more cost of adding 1 more camera for depth when another's ultra-wide sensor can do it too.

Other features - HONOR X9a 5G uses the In-Display fingerprint reader and has stereo speakers and charges using a USB-C cable. Connectivity-wise, it has dual-band WiFi, 5G, 4G LTE, Bluetooth 5.1, OTG, GPS, and dual SIM.

Meanwhile, the Galaxy A23 5G has a side-mounted fingerprint reader instead coupled with stereo speakers and USB-C

HONOR X9a 5G advantages - Eye catchy design, more durable screen, bigger RAM, and storage, battery, faster charging, better sensors in terms of pixels, and efficient camera implementation.
Samsung Galaxy A23 5G advantages - others may prefer a matte finish and simpler look, a high refresh rate screen, has more memory configurations.

Our thoughts

The HONOR X9a 5G is the clear winner in this match due to getting more features while paying for less. Yes, Samsung A23 5G also has a cheaper version but they are miles behind on what can HONOR bring to the table.

What do you guys think?
