DITO Telecommunity eyes satellite tech for isolated areas

According to DITO Chief Technology Officer Rodolfo Santiago, the company is targeting to pilot test low Eart orbit (LEO), a satellite technology that would allow far-flung areas to have access to connectivity.

The transaction is now being finalized with OneWeb Network Access Associates Ltd., a London-based company backed by the United Kingdom government and India’s Bharti Enterprises Ltd.

Discussion on this is already in the "advanced stage," Santiago said.

It is not yet finalized. We are expecting it to be finalized as soon as possible. Our talks with them are already in the advanced stage, it is more of checking whether [everything's] okay and the commercial rates, Santiago said.

He noted that the LEO technology delivers better connectivity as it has higher capacity and lower latency.

Santiago said the third player is also in talks with other providers.
