Text scams remain a problem
According to a report by CNN Philippines, DICT Sec. Ivan Uy said text scammers are taking advantage of the 90-day extension for SIM registration to be able to victimize more users.
I already warned that once we extend this [SIM registration deadline], scammers will use that to take the opportunity to continue and hasten their scamming methods using their respective cellphones, he said.
The DICT chief noted scammers have even changed their approach.
Some ask users to click on a link that would redirect to a fake website to supposedly register their SIM cards, while some act as e-wallet providers, urging users to re-register their SIM to activate their e-wallet.
Uy told the public this is not true.
Once you register your SIM card, everything is still the same and you are still registered to your e-wallet, he told SIM users.
He reminded the public not to fall for these methods and to register their SIM to address the problem.
The latest DICT data showed that SIM registration has reached more than 95 million.
Uy said they expect to hit the target number of registrants at around 100 million in the coming months.
SIM registration runs until July 25. Failure to comply will lead to the deactivation of your SIM.
