According to a recent report by global news agency Reuters, technology titan HUAWEI will return to the 5G smartphone market very soon.
To those who missed it, HUAWEI is one of the first brands to release a 5G-ready smartphone. But due to the imposed US sanctions over alleged "spying" activities, the company was barred from accessing the said tech.
That may change soon. Reuters said that research firms claim that HUAWEI will return to the 5G smartphone industry by the end of the year by procuring its own chips domestically.
The report said that HUAWEI will use its own advances in semiconductor design tools along with chipmaking from Semiconductor Manufacturing International Co (SMIC).
The company is expected to use SMIC's N+1 manufacturing process with a forecast yield rate of usable chips below 50 percent. The report added that its 5G shipments would be limited to around 2 million to 4 million units.
SMIC's N+1 is equivalent to 7nm. One of the anonymous research firms told Reuters that HUAWEI asked SMIC to produce chip components below 14nm this year.
The forecasted yield rate of below 50 percent means that 5G chips from SMIC are going to be costly.
Reuters said that HUAWEI and SMIC did not respond to a request for comment.
Last month, HUAWEI denied a report stating that it will be supplied with a 5G Qualcomm chipset. The possible reason behind that is this new report that they will be making their own 5G chips without US parts.
Let's wait and see if this report is true.
