New fares in LRT-1, LRT-2 announced

Authorities said the new train fare for LRT-1 and LRT-2 will start on August 2, Wednesday.
The new fare matrix

According to Light Rail Manila Corporation (LMRC), LRT-1’s private operator, the new price of a single journey ticket on the train line ranges from PHP 15 to PHP 35.

For store value cards or beep cards, the fare will range from PHP 14 to PHP 35.

This means that the cost of riding LRT-1 from Baclaran to Roosevelt will cost PHP 35.

Meanwhile, single journey ticket in LRT-2 will remain at PHP 15 but the maximum fare will be PHP 35, the Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA) said.

If you are a beep card owner, the fare will range from PHP 14 to PHP 33.

In effect, an LRT-2 ride from Recto to Antipolo will cost PHP 33 for Beep card owners and PHP 35 for those using single-journey tickets.

A 20 percent discount may still be availed by the elderly, PWDs, and students when buying single-journey tickets.

According to a Philstar report, DOTr Railways Assistant Secretary Jorjette Aquino earlier said that the additional fare will be used to improve the train lines’ services, amenities, and technical capacities.

Light Rail Manila Corporation has also said that the hike is needed to decrease its deficit. It has so far reported a PHP 1.46 billion deficit, which may increase to PHP 5.7 billion in two years.

The Light Rail Transit Authority, a government-owned operator, expects an additional PHP 114 million in revenue from the fare hike, of which 97 percent will be allocated for maintenance, repairs, and other expenses.

DOTR said the last train fare hike was in 2015.
