Limited time exclusivity with Samsung?
When the Samsung Galaxy S23 series was introduced earlier this year, Samsung claimed that an exclusive custom Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip was used. XDA developers theorized that this custom chip is what a 'Plus' variant would have been.

XDA Developer's comparison table |
The standard Snapdragon 8 Gen 2's part number is SM8550-AB with a 3.2GHz Primary Core CPU frequency and a 680MHz GPU frequency. While the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy has a part number of SM8550-AC with a 3.36GHz Primary Core CPU frequency and a 719MHz GPU frequency. It could be that both are the same but with different Marketing names.
XDA Developer recently received a review unit of the Nubia RedMagic 8S Pro and found out the phone's Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Leading Version has the same part number and clock frequency as Samsung's variant of the SoC.
The website then reached out to Qualcomm for confirmation and the Taiwanese manufacturer had the following response:
"There are no specification differences between Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy and this new variant of Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 with 3.36GHz peak CPU speeds. Following our expanded strategic partnership announcement in July 2022, we worked closely with Samsung to uniquely customize Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy for Flip5/Fold5/Tab9. For example, Samsung provided their proprietary camera IP to for us to integrate into the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy. Given the minor adjustment to CPU prime core frequency, we’re treating this platform as a variant of the original platform (Snapdragon 8 Gen 2). Our goal is to maintain our simplified naming structure that was introduced in November 2021 so it’s easier for OEMs and consumers to discover and choose devices powered by Snapdragon. "
From the brand's statement, Qualcomm is confirming what XDA Developer has theorized and that the SoC on the Galaxy S23 series, Tab S9 series, Z Fold 5 and Z Flip 5 are the same as Nubia RedMagic 8S Pro.
It now begs the question if more smartphones will be introduced with the same chipset later this year.
