For interoperability
The European Commission has released a document that details how the EU wants Apple to make its features interoperable with Android and other platforms.
Among those being proposed by the EU is providing interoperability with all functionalities of the iOS notifications that are available to Apple's connected physical devices, including but limited to Apple Watch, Apple Vision Pro, as well as any future Apple-connected devices.
The proposed measure also wants Apple's data transfer features such as AirDrop, and AirPlay to be accessible to third parties.
Furthermore, the document indicated features for device set-up and configuration that it wants to be accessible to other parties. This includes an interoperability solution that provides third parties with access to the same proximity-triggered pairing feature that is available to Apple.
The EU has set January 9, 2025, as the consultation deadline.
Meanwhile, Apple criticized the proposal, saying "It's getting personal." It also expressed concerns about security.
We are concerned that some companies—with data practices that do not meet the high standards of data protection law held by the EU and supported by Apple—may attempt to abuse the DMAs [Digital Markets Act] interoperability provisions to access sensitive user data, the tech giant said.
Apple said it is reviewing all interoperability requests and implementing them when possible, taking into account the need to protect privacy and security on the platform. The company also said it is looking into enhancements to its platform that will enable richer experiences while continuing to protect sensitive user data and maintain device security.
We will never abandon our bedrock commitment to our user's privacy and security. We trust that the EC will seek to implement the interoperability requirements in a manner that respects the GDPR, Apple said.
