Better camera shutter sounds soon

Xiaomi is bringing some of its Leica-enhanced photography experience to a wider range of smartphones aside from the Xiaomi 15 Ultra

Based on a  Weibo post by Xiaomi Camera Division product manager "Bao", the brand's "Refreshed Minimalist Camera" app, which debuted last February 2025 together with the 15 Ultra variant, will soon be available on several Xiaomi and Redmi models for the next 60 days.

The update includes a subtle but notable addition: new shutter sound effects modeled after classic Leica cameras.

Each sound corresponds to a specific Leica model, and early data from the Xiaomi 15 Ultra indicates user preferences. The "Mechanical" option, inspired by the analog Leica M6, features a simulated motor rewind sound when the shutter is held for more than 0.4 seconds. This design choice aims to replicate the tactile experience of traditional rangefinder cameras, and it currently leads in popularity with an 18.8 percent adoption rate.

Other options include the "Classic" mode, based on the Leica M9 digital rangefinder with 16 percent usage, the default M3-inspired sound at 15 percent, and the "Modern" setting, derived from the Leica M10 with 14 percent stats. These sounds are designed to enhance the mobile photography experience, adding a more deliberate and cinematic quality to each shot.

The rollout will occur in two phases. The first, running from May to mid-June, will include the Xiaomi 15 and 14 series.

Below is the list of devices that are included in the update for the 1st phase:
