The Israel Defense Forces has announced a new policy tightening rules on mobile devices for senior officers.

According to a report by The Jerusalem Post, the IDF is prohibiting the use of Android phones on IDF-issued lines. Commanders from the rank of lieutenant colonel and above will be required to use only Apple iPhones for official communications as authorities aim to reduce the risk of intrusions on senior officers’ handsets.

While not much information has been shared, authorities have said that standardized operating systems will be standardized to simplify security controls and updates.

Israeli authorities have issued a caution against the use of social platforms and messaging apps, as hostile actors may be using them to target soldiers' phones and track movements.

The new step follows earlier efforts to harden mobile use across the force, including training and internal drills designed to raise officers’ awareness of social-engineering tactics, the report said.
