Solution to money sent to the wrong person
For those who always use e-wallets, have you ever accidentally sent money to the wrong recipient? While there are those who are good enough to return the money, there are still those, unfortunately, who choose to be silent about this.
A recent similar case was shared on
Facebook, wherein the user said their assistant sent PHP 13,000 to the wrong GCash number. They claimed the platform said there is nothing it can do, so they escalated the case to government authorities.
The money was then returned.
Commenting on the case, GCash said its Customer Experience team, on the same day of reporting, acknowledged the concern and guided the user through the formal process for requesting assistance.
As part of standard handling, GCash said it explained that validation and coordination would be required, which may take time.
The return of funds is not the result of an automatic system reversal, but typically occurs through successful coordination and the legal obligation of the recipient under solutio indebiti to return money received by mistake, the company said.
GCash assured that there are no fees charged for wrong-send reversal requests. Any deduction observed in this case was due to a pre-existing auto-debit arrangement in the recipient's account, unrelated to the recovery process. Eventually, the full amount was returned when it was available from the recipient's wallet.
The platform said the case has been resolved, and the user has acknowledged this already. While the reversal is not instant, GCash said there is still a way to resolve such cases.
To avoid experiencing such problems, here's what you can do:
- Scan QR Codes - Ask the recipient for their QR code. It’s 100% accurate and removes the risk of typos.
- Check the Initials - Before hitting "Send," look at the masked name (e.g., M***A S.) on the confirmation screen. If the initials don't match your recipient's name, stop.
- The PHP 1 Test - Sending a large amount? Send PHP 1 first. Once they confirm they got it, send the rest.
- Use your Contacts - Tap the "Address Book" icon in GCash instead of typing the 11-digit number.
- Double-Check - Read the number out loud before you tick the confirmation box and press send.
When you accidentally sent the amount to the wrong receiver, here's what to do at least at the GCash platform:
- Contact the recipient immediately and request the return of funds. Under the law, they are obligated to return undue funds.
- If contacting fails, report the transaction without delay through official support channels such as the GCash Help Center or hotline (2882 for Globe/TM, or (02) 7213-9999 (Globe Landline), or Internet Call through the Help Center.
- Provide complete transaction details (reference number, amount, date, recipient). Stay responsive to follow-ups for verification.
NOTE: Allow time for review and coordination, as cases require proper validation.
If the recipient remains unresponsive or refuses to return the funds, you may file a formal complaint with local police authorities in your area.
