Sad news for the smartphone industry. Sony might opt to shut down operations in multiple countries to focus on its adoption of 5G technology.
Kenichiro Yoshida

World renowned editor and leaker, Evan Blass latest tweet stated that the smartphone brand's operations and offices in the Middle East, Turkey and Africa will go offline by October.

We've yet to receive an officially statement from Sony, but this makes sense if true because the Japanese tech giant has been recording weak sales from its mobile unit.

The CEO, Kenichiro Yoshida earlier expressed determination to bounce back in the market and to stabilise the business by 2020 by focusing on the 5G technology.

The top official also wanted to keep its eyes on further developing of its content business, software, services, and subscription segments.

Industry sources said Sony might refocus its efforts on Europe, the US and the Asian region, where it performs well enough to record profitability.

We may not see Sony in the countries stated above, but the company will surely keep its smartphone business as it recently unveiled its flagship Xeria XZ2 Premium, which would begin shipping in the US on July 30.
