Counterpoint: List of the top 10 global smartphone vendors (Q3 2018)

Aside from IDC, Counterpoint Research also released their own Market Monitor service, for the global smartphone shipments.

Top 10 in the world

Counterpoint's data showed the top 10 smartphone vendors instead of just the usual top 5 from themselves, IDC, and other research firms.

Their latest research also showed that the global smartphone shipments declined 3 percent annually for a total of 386.8 million units shipped in Q3 2018. Counterpoint also revealed that the top 10 players captured 79 percent of the market to leave over 600+ brands fight for the last 21 percent of the market.

The top 10 players last Q3 2018 are the following:

1. Samsung - 19 percent

2. Huawei - 13 percent

3. Apple - 12 percent

4. Xiaomi - 9 percent

5. OPPO - 9 percent

6. Vivo - 8 percent

7. Lenovo - 3 percent

8. LG - 3 percent

9. HMD - 1 percent

10. Tecno - 1 percent

Counterpoint's data that Samsung is still the king with 19 percent of the total global market share. The Korean giant shipped 72.3 million units worldwide, but with -13 percent of decline coming from 83.3 million last Q3 2017.

Global smartphone shipments Q3 2018

Huawei is still the number 2 brand in the world with 52.0 million units shipped or 13 percent of the market share. The brand gaining market share at an accelerated pace as well. They grew by 33 percent in total.

Apple failed to reclaim its number 2 spot from Huawei for the 2nd quarter in a row. They shipped 46.9 percent which is higher than the 46.7 last year. But, their revenues for devices grew by 29 percent by increasing their average selling price to USD 793.

Xiaomi also grew a lot coming from last year. They shipped 35.7 million units versus the 28.5 million last year.

OPPO and Vivo also has a YoY growth of 4 and 7 percent, respectively.

Lenovo/Motorola, LG, HMD (Nokia), and Techno are also included in the top 10.
