Capable mid-rangers, one of them is the most affordable with a pop-up camera yet

Glossy back design
Glossy back design

Build/Design - The materials used on both devices are comparable. Both use a 3D curved glasstic back which feels quite premium for the price. The difference is with the finish. Samsung's finish is super glossy while the Y9 Prime 2019's has a two-tone back design. Both also come with vertically aligned cameras with a slight bump and a fingerprint scanner in the middle. Y9 Prime 2019 has 3 cameras at the back.

The body of both devices is made out of plastic.

The front panel of the A30 is smaller at 6.4-inch and it goes with a tiny Infinity-U notch for 90.6 screen-to-body ratio. On the other hand, Y9 Prime 2019 front panel is a bigger 6.59-inch TFT LCD (LTPS) with no notch and 91.006 percent of screen-to-body ratio.

As expected, Huawei made that feat possible by incorporating an automatic pop-up selfie camera module.
Slim bezels, no notch

Display - We like the fact that A30 is using a color-rich AMOLED panel. However, it still has a notch even if it is small. The Y9 Prime 2019 has an even bigger 6.59-inch panel with no notch and small bezels for a more immersive viewing experience.

Both come with a tall 19:5:9 screen aspect ratio with FHD+ 2340 x 1080 resolution.

AnTuTu speed score of Y9 Prime 2019

Specs - The matchup between their chipsets is not close. Huawei Y9 Prime 2019's 12nm Kirin 710F is comparable than the 10nm 2.3GHz 64-bit Exynos 9610 octa-core processor of its Galaxy A50 higher-end brother. At AnTuTu, A30 got a score of around 108K. On the other hand, Y9 Prime 2019 has a bigger 142K score.

Both are loaded with 4GB RAM as well. However, the Huawei contender uses 128GB storage instead of just 64GB. The battery is the same at 4,000mAh. Both also go with reversible USB-C charging ports. A30's charging time is faster since it has a 15W charger versus the 10W of Y9 Prime 2019.

Expect, Y9 Prime 2019 to load apps and games smoother.

Cameras - A30's primary 16MP camera has a bright and wide f/1.7 aperture. It is also paired with a 5MP f/2.2 ultra-wide lens. However, it doesn't come with a 16MP f/1.8 + 8MP f/2.4 120-degree ultra wide-angle lens + 2MP f/2.4 triple-camera setup unlike the Y9 Prime 2019.

For selfies, both uses a 16MP sensor. A50's selfie camera has a chance to be better since it has a wider f/2.0 aperture size versus the f/2.2 of its competitor.

Other features - The rest of the features are comparable. Both come with a rear-facing fingerprint scanner. Both also go with USB-C ports, 3.5mm headphone slots, and 4G LTE connectivity. A50 has a slight advantage here since it goes with Bluetooth 5 and WiFi 802.11ac (2.4GHz/5GHz).

Samsung Galaxy A30 advantages - AMOLED panel, slightly brighter main and selfie cam, dual-band WiFi, Bluetooth 5.0
Huawei Y9 Prime 2019 advantages - Full-screen design with no notch and minimal bezels, faster Kirin 710 chipset, larger 128GB storage, triple-camera setup, more affordable price tag

Quick thoughts

Despite being the more affordable phone between the two, the advantage in specs and design goes to the Huawei Y9 Prime 2019.

It doesn't mean that the Galaxy A30 is a bad device though. In fact it goes with few advantages such as the AMOLED display with punchier colors, slightly faster 15W adaptive charger, and cameras with slightly brighter aperture sizes.

However, we cannot deny that the Y9 Prime 2019 is the more attractive looking phone overall. It is the device with bigger notchless/near bezel-less screen, speedier chipset, triple-cam, pop-up cam, and more affordable price tag.

How about you guys? What do you think?
