Samsung Galaxy A52 and A72

Announced at the recent March 2021 Unpacked event, the Samsung Galaxy A52, and A72 are the successors to the popular A51 and A71 that we reviewed back in 2020.

Both smartphones feature an FHD+ Infinity-O Super AMOLED display with a 90Hz refresh rate and 800 nits max brightness. Inside both phones is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 720G, 6GB/8GB RAM, 128GB/256GB of storage, 4,500mAh/5,000mAh battery with Samsung's Adaptive Fast Charging.

Samsung has decided to change the design of the A-series to a more muted and minimalist aesthetic with its sleek camera module and Haze Matte finish.

Let's dive in!

Build Quality/Design

At the back of the new Galaxy A52 and A72 is a new more minimal back design that extends all the way to the new sleeker camera module. It has the new Haze Matte finish that feels premium when held and looks understatedly elegant when seen close-up. The new finish also makes the phone resistant to fingerprint smudges and makes it less slippery than a glossy back finish.

Only the Samsung logo and the camera module stand out. The four colorways include Awesome Blue, Awesome Violet, Awesome Black, and Awesome White.

In front of both phones is the FHD+ Super AMOLED Infinity-O display with a 90Hz refresh rate and 800 nit peak brightness. The only difference between the A52 and A72 displays is the size. The A52 has a 6.5-inch display while the A72 has a 6.7-inch panel. The panel is bright and vibrant out of the box and it is impressive and rare that Samsung was able to make the chin bezel be nearly as slim as the rest of the bezels.
Top and bottom sides

On top of both phones are the SIM tray and microphone port while at the bottom is the speaker grill, USB Type-C, microphone port, and the 3.5mm headphone jack.

At the back of the A52 is a 64MP f/1.8 main camera, 12MP f/2.2 123-degree ultra-wide camera, 5MP f/2.4 Macro camera, and a 5MP f/2.4 depth camera while in front is a 32MP f/2.2 selfie camera.

The A72 has nearly the same camera set-up except that it removes the 5MP depth camera for an 8MP f/2.4 3x optical telephoto camera with 30x digital zoom (Space Zoom).

Camera modes include the usual Photo, Video, Night, Portrait, and more. What is surprising is the inclusion of the Pro photo and Pro video mode.

We'll get to see more once we get a review unit.

Samsung Philippines says that the Galaxy A52, A52 5G, and A72 will arrive in the Philippines this March 26, 2021.

Overall our first impressions of the Galaxy A52 and A72 because Samsung has greatly improved the design and materials of the line while offering large batteries, high refresh rate displays, and versatile camera modules. Samsung even included the 30x digital zoom (AKA Space Zoom) from previous flagships.

Both the Samsung Galaxy A52 and A72 are powered by the 8nm Snapdragon 720G 4G chip. These are respectable chips commonly found in the PHP 10 to 19K in the Philippines.

A52 is priced at PHP 18,990. A72 retails for PHP 23,990.
