Digital national IDs?

The PSA released a statement on Wednesday announcing its target of delivering 30 million cards and 20 million digital IDs this year.

It noted that the pilot test for the printable version may start in October. It will contain security features, just like those found in physical cards. It also has a unique digital signature embedded in a quick response code for safe authentication.

The mobile version, meanwhile, may be available before the end of 2022.

The PSA said the digital printed PhilIDs and the downloadable mobile ID application can serve as temporary copies as Filipinos wait for their physical cards to be delivered.

It explained that the digital national IDs will still serve functions similar to the physical ones as valid proof of identification.

The PSA is continuously working on the printing and delivery of PhilID cards to close the gap between the number of registered individuals and cards delivered, Deputy National Statistician of the PhilSys Registry Office Fred Solleta said.

PSA Undersecretary Dennis Mapa, also the National Statistician and Civil Registrar General, said the rollout of national IDs will strengthen the government's goal of improving financial inclusion.

This will immediately allow better access to more financial and social protection services through the provision of a free valid proof of identity while waiting for their physical ID, Mapa said.
