Smart beats Globe, regains mobile market dominance with higher subscriber base

PLDT's wireless arm Smart Communications has reclaimed its lead in the number of mobile subscribers, overtaking Globe Telecom.

More Filipinos now use Smart Communications

Last week, the company reported that it has 55.2 million subscribers despite the implementation of SIM registration. The figure was higher than its closest rival Globe Telecom’s 54.7 million.

Given this development, PLDT chair Manuel Pangilinan said there was "a big task ahead on the revenue side."

I don't think the battle should be in subscriber number. The game is really your ability to grow the market, Pangilinan said.

PLDT president Alfredo Panlilio said the group remains aggressive in enticing more customers, with the launch of eSIMs as its latest initiative to attract more subscribers.

In the first nine months of 2023, PLDT's profit went up by 1 percent to PHP 27.88 billion, driven by its fiber and enterprise segments. Total revenues also jumped 3 percent to PHP 156.36 billion.
