Indonesian iOS fans rejoice

The brand was banned from selling its latest smartphones in October because Apple failed to meet the country's required investment plans.

Not long after, even the Google Pixel series was also banned.

Indonesia requires foreign companies to provide 40 percent of locally sourced components to operate locally as part of the Domestic Component Level (TKDN) certification. Companies can fulfill those requirements either by manufacturing products locally, developing software locally or setting up R&D centers.

The negotiations snowballed into a lengthy negotiation game where Apple pledged to increase its investment commitments that were reportedly worth as high as USD 1 billion.

The Indonesian government insisted that Apple manufacture iPhones locally to lift the ban, but it looks like the request will not pull through. Apple will instead set up a manufacturing facility for Apple AirTag trackers and a separate factory for accessories. The smartphone giant is also expected to set up additional R&D centers and invest in local academies for students.
