A new take on Tri-fold design?

The device features a dual-inward-folding mechanism, a departure from conventional foldable designs. According to TECNO, this G-style folding structure aims to offer greater versatility while addressing some limitations of existing book-style and outward-folding tri-fold models.

Unlike outward-folding tri-fold devices that leave the flexible display exposed, TECNO's new tri-fold mechanism concept keeps the main screen protected.

When closed, the device forms a G-shape, ensuring the inner display remains flat and seamless when fully unfolded, potentially enhancing media viewing and multitasking experiences.

The design features a secondary cover screen for everyday convenience, enabling quick access to basic tasks without unfolding the device. When opened, the expansive inner display delivers a seamless tablet-like experience, ideal for both productivity and entertainment.

It also supports multi-angle hovering, enabling hands-free use in various positions, similar to a laptop stand. This feature could be useful for video calls, media playback, or split-screen productivity.

Despite its complex hinge mechanism and dual screens, TECNO claims the PHANTOM Ultimate G Fold maintains a slim profile, potentially making it one of the thinnest tri-fold designs to date. The company attributes this to advancements in hinge miniaturization and flexible display technology.

TECNO has previously experimented with tri-fold and rollable prototypes. The PHANTOM Ultimate G Fold Concept appears to be a continuation of these efforts, signaling the brand’s interest in pushing the boundaries of foldable technology.

The brand is expected to officially launch the concept in mid-July. While still in the prototype phase, the device's design and engineering suggest a potential step toward commercial tri-fold smartphones.
