Based on the MoU, PLDT, Smart, and Nokia will collaborate to identify the innovative real world use of 5G standalone (5G SA) solutions such as artificial intelligence, drones, and Internet of Things (IOT) applications for schools, colleges, and universities.

Smart explained that 5G SA solely relies on 5G for data transmission to allow  users experience the full benefits of 5G connectivity. In comparison, the 5G NSA (non-standalone) combines the use of 5G and existing 4G LTE resources in transmitting data.

5G SA would also enable the introduction of other services like the real-time remote control and autonomous driving.

Smart and Nokia's MoU also covers the deployment of 5G SA technologies and services. For example, 5G handsets and applications.

Smart said that eventually, the solution and technologies they will develop with Nokia with benefit the Philippine educational sector.

With this partnership, PLDT and Smart wil be one of the pioneers of 5G SA deployment.

To recall, Smart and Nokia first tested 5G back in 2016 when they achieved speeds of 2.5 Gbps. To date, Smart is upgrading its network's core and transport elements to deliver 5G services.

Smart is expected to rollout 5G faster than 4G before.
