Bang-for-the buck flagship-grade phone battle

Build/Design - OnePlus 7 has a combination of glass and metal for the body. At the back, it has a 2.5D glass protected by Gorilla Glass 5. Huawei Nova 5T also has a glass back with a metal frame for the body. No mention of Gorilla Glass protection though.

Display - OnePlus 7 has a 6.41-inch Optic AMOLED screen with 2340 x 1080 FHD+ resolution and 402 ppi pixel density. It also has an unspecified Gorilla Glass protection.

Huawei Nova 5T has a 6.26-inch 2.5D curved screen w/ FHD+ 2340 x 1080 resolution at 412 ppi.

Tiny notch or punch-hole

OnePlus 7 sport a taller Optic AMOLED display while Nova 5T has a slightly smaller IPS screen. Both have an FHD+ resolution. OnePlus 7 has a dewdrop nitch while Nova 5T has a hole punch on the top left of the display.

Specs - In terms of performance, OnePlus 7 has a 2.84GHz 64-bit Snapdragon 855 octa-core processor, Adreno 640 GPU, 8GB LPDDR4X RAM, 256GB UFS 3.0 storage and a 3,700MAh battery with 20W Dash Charge.

Huawei Nova 5T has a 2.6GHz Kirin 980 octa-core processor with Dual NPU, Mali-G60 MP10 GPU with GPU Turbo, 8GB LPDDR4X RAM, 128GB UFS 2.1 storage, and a 3,750mAh with 22.5W SuperCharge.

Both devices have impressive specs on paper. OnePlus 7 has a slightly faster CPU and GPU. Both have the same amount and type RAM. OnePlus 7 also has faster and bigger storage. Battery and charging tech goes to Nova 5T.

Both are also packed with 4G LTE support and dual-band WiFi.

Cameras - In terms of cameras, both are impressive. OnePlus 7 has a dual camera setup with a 48MP f/1.7 Sony IMX586 main sensor with PDAF, OIS, EIS + 5MP f/2.4 w/ dual-tone LED flash. It also has a 16MP f/2.0 Sony IMX471 selfie camera.

Huawei Nova 5T has a quad-camera setup with a combo of 48MP f/1.8 Sony IMX586 with PDAF, CAF + 16MP f/2.2 ultra wide-angle sensor + 2MP f/2.4 4cm macro + 2MP f/2.4 depth with LED flash. It also has 32MP f/2.0 selfie camera with AI HDR.

OnePlus 7 has OIS and EIS on its side, but the quad-camera setup of the Huawei Nova 5T offers more functionality, versatility, and features.

For selfies, Huawei Nova 5T's 32MP snapper is higher than the 16MP of OP7. But OP7 has some of the best selfie cam software so I won't count it out.

Other features - OnePlus 7 has dual-band WiFi, NFC, dual-band GPS, In-Display fingerprint sensor, face unlock, USB-C port, and stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos.

Huawei Nova 5T has dual-band WiFi as well, 4G LTE, NFC, OTG, dual-band GPS, face unlock, side-mounted fingerprint sensor, and USB-C port.

OnePlus 7 has an In-Display fingerprint sensor versus Nova 5T's side-mounted sensor. Nova 5T has OTG while OnePlus 7 has stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos.

Our thoughts

Both the Nova 5T and OnePlus 7 are superb bang-for-the-buck offerings with one under PHP 20K while the other is under PHP 30K.

If you are looking for a device with four rear cameras, better selfies, flagship features, a bigger battery, faster charging and a more affordable price tag, Nova 5T could be the best pick.

If you are looking for a slightly bigger screen, slightly better CPU and GPU, faster storage, stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos then get the OnePlus 7.

It could go either way depending on your preference.
