Xiaomi's Redmi Note 8 Pro is one of the most hyped mid-range phones of 2019 for a reason. At its PHP 11,490 starting price, it is the most affordable with a 64MP primary camera yet.

To put it into an initial test, we roamed around the concrete jungle of Ayala in Makati to see how its camera performs in low light.

Just a quick recap, we know that it has four cameras at the back, but for this photowalk, we only used the Samsung-made 64MP f/1.8 Samsung ISOCELL Bright GW1 with 4-in-1 pixel binning and Xiaomi's own Night Mode technology.

Is this the mid-range Night mode king?

Without further ado, here are our shots!

Our first stop is at the Mistral Bar at Raffle Makati to chill, grab a bottle of high-quality local beer, and enjoy the beautiful Makati view at night.

The first shot that I took is the Engkanto craft beer I ordered. Here you can see that even without the night mode, the image that I got is highly detailed and not that noisy. That's the power of the 64MP cam with improved low-light performance due to its pixel binning solution.

I also tried to take an image using the Night mode to see if it can further improve my shot. The good news? It did! It enhanced the exposure, dynamic range, and details on the shot.

After that, I decided that I'll use Night mode all throughout. I'm glad that I did as I was able to capture this beautiful Makati view shot clearer than most similarly priced devices.

I also went to the pool area to take some nice images with light reflections. Impressive!

My next stop is in the Mentoré Coffee & Bar by UCC below the hotel and I was impressed by the level of detail that this phone can capture. If you can notice, the lights on the logo of the coffee shop are not overexposed.

Then I walked around the area of Glorietta and Greenbelt malls to take the images above. To my eyes, the Redmi Note 8 performed nicely again. Though I noticed some artifacts and a bit of oversharpening in some scenes. Still, those are very forgivable for the price.

I also roamed around the Ayala Triangle Gardens to take the 3 images above. I photographed the Shangri-La Makati hotel, the Blackbird at the Nielson Tower restaurant, and the Sultan Kudarat Monument.

In case you are wondering how did I know that it is the statue of Sultan Kudarat? Simple! I cropped the image and read the text. 😉

Quick thoughts

For its PHP 11,490 starting price, I am very pleased! The 64MP primary shooter along with Xiaomi's ever-improving camera software did its job very well.

For me, despite a few weak points, its imaging performance in low light ranks among the best camera phones in its class.

I can also see this camera compete with other pricier mid-range camera phones range quite well.
