Watch the OPPO X 2021 rollable concept smartphone in action

In the video, you can see that the OPPO X 2021 rollable phone looks like a normal smartphone at the first glance. The magic happens once you swipe your finger up on the side-mounted fingerprint sensor as it rolls out and expands the screen. The screen expands from a 6.7-inch screen to a tablet-like 7.4-inch screen.

The UI and software adapt to the screen expansion seamlessly too. UI elements such as widgets, status bar, and icons move to correct their positioning and symmetry. Some apps even adapt their UI to the new screen size. For example, you can read a tweet on the left side while continuing to scroll on the right or view an online shop catalog on the left while viewing details on a specific item.

For the multimedia experience, when watching a video in landscape or portrait mode, the video will also adapt to the expanding screen. It adjusts the size of the video seamlessly without ever needing to pause. The aspect ratio is corrected automatically so there are no stretched images.

OPPO uses a proprietary roll-motor powertrain for its moving mechanism while the OLED panel is laminated onto a "Warp Track" for a seamless rollout and protection. The rollable form factor does not only affect the screen. It also bodes well in the future of smartphone camera lenses which may be able to be retractable, have better speakers for better sound quality, as well as better battery and antenna setups.

Of course, we still need to take everything here with a grain of salt since this is still a concept phone. We may be far from it being available commercially and if it does it will be a first-gen device which, as the foldable phones taught us, can be a hit or miss.
