BlackBerry recently reminded its users that the legacy services for its non-Android smartphones will end on January 4, 2022.
End of classic BB phones

End of the BB era...

Basically, these are classic BlackBerry devices that are using its legacy services. BlackBerry 7.1 OS and earlier, BlackBerry 10 software, and BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.1 and earlier versions, will no longer be available after January 4, 2022.

This means that its WiFi connections, data, phone calls, and even 911 will no longer reliably function after the above-mentioned date.

This is an expected move for the company as even its widely popular BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) service, a key feature of classic BlackBerry phones died in 2019.

Once among the top mobile makers in the world, BlackBerry suffered from the rise of Android and iOS devices. It lost its users and failed to attract new ones despite numerous comeback efforts.

BlackBerry even did the Android experiment with the help of Chinese tech giant TCL, but it also failed and the partnership ended last August 2020.

At the moment, the company transitioned into a full software company specializing in cybersecurity.

Thank you for the memories, BlackBerry phones!
