OPPO Reno6 Z 5G Unboxing and First Impressions

OPPO
Infinix
OPPO is set to release the new Reno6 series in the Philippines on August 6, 2021, roughly 6 months following the launch of the Reno5 series in the country. One of them is the Reno6 Z 5G.
Meet OPPO Reno6 Z, the new mid-range camera-centric to consider?

As a refresher, the last Reno Z device that the company launched for the Philippine market is the Reno4 Z 5G. There is a Reno5 Z 5G in Singapore, but it failed to reach the Philippine shores.

Now, we have the Reno6 Z 5G highlighting the Reno Glow design, AMOLED punch-hole display, MTK 5G SoC, 64MP triple-cam, and VOOC Flash Charge as well as plenty of software tricks make your mobile photography and videography experience better.

OPPO hasn't shared its official SRP here yet. But in Thailand, it retails for THB 12,990 or around PHP 19.9K. Since it is a neighboring country, we won't be surprised if it'll get a similar price tag.

We have the device right now and let's check it out.

Unboxing/Accessories

The box

Reno6 Z followed the simpler light blue-green box of the Reno5 series.
What's in the box
What's in the box

Inside, as expected, it is packed with most of the things you'll need on a newly purchased smartphone.

First, you will see another box containing a FREE TPU clear case to protect your phone from unwanted damages, paper documents like the warranty card.

After that, you will find the device itself with a pre-installed screen protector.

Under the phone, you will see the 30W VOOC Flash Charge 4.0 power brick, USB-A to USB-C data/charging cable, and earphones with microphones.

Unlike other phone models from other brands, the Reno6 Z still has an in-box power brick and earphones. That's a positive thing.

Build Quality/Design

The materials used are similar to what we saw on the Reno5 4G.

It uses a textured polycarbonate curved backplate and a 2.5D curved glass display. But, the frame it is using appears to be more solid this time.

OPPO Philippines confirmed to team GIZGUIDE that the top of the motherboard case is made out of aluminum alloy + plastic.

Decent overall build, water resistance is lacking

The company also noted that it has Corning's Gorilla Glass 5 protection. Gorilla Glass 5 is designed to withstand up to 1.2-meter waist-high drops on hard or rough surfaces.

For extra protection, OPPO added an
OCF 2D high-definition film screen protector.

However, unlike most smartphones in its class, there's no rubber gasket found on the SIM tray suggesting that it isn't resistant to water splashes.

For a mid-ranger, this feels durable enough. But to be sure, and prevent damages from accidental drops, use the case included in the package.

Thankfully, it has a pre-installed screen protector. But, to be sure, put a case.
6.4-inch AMOLED screen with punch-hole
6.4-inch AMOLED screen with punch-hole

In terms of design, this is where the Reno6 Z will stand out. Easily, is one of the most beautiful-looking phones in its class.

Proven design!

It uses the "Reno Glow" design at the back available in Aurora and Stellar Black colors designed to look great and feel good in the hands at the same time.

The OPPO Reno Glow design highlights a shimmering effect at the back with an anti-fingerprint smudge finish. So, unlike other phones with a glossy back finish, based on our experience, it doesn't suffer from those annoying smudges.

In front, it uses a reasonably large 6.4-inch AMOLED panel with FHD+ 2400 x 1080 resolution, 20:9 tall aspect ratio, and a punch-hole on the top-left area housing the 32MP f/2.4 selfie camera.

This display design has a slim top and side bezels. But, the chin bezel is thicker than what I personally prefer at this price point.

OPPO still claims that it has a 90.8 percent screen-to-body ratio. That's considered decent and pretty immersive.

Aside from being an immersive display, it has
SGS Eye Care Display Certification, Netflix & Amazon HD Streaming Certification, and 800 nits peak brightness.

However, the refresh rate stays at 60Hz, not 90Hz, unlike most competing handsets.

On top, it has a mic. Below, you'll see the single speaker, USB-C port, another mic, and a 3.5mm headphone jack slot.
Left, right
Left, right

On left, you will see a pin-hole to access the triple slot tray (dual nano SIM + microSD slot) and volume rockers. On the right, you will see the power key that doubles as a fingerprint reader.

Unlike other side-mounted fingerprint readers, embossed, it feels more like a button this time. Some like it, but personally, I prefer the latter.

OPPO is also noted that this device is slim and light and they are correct. This measures 160.20 x 73.38 mm and it is just 7.92 mm (Stellar Black) or 7.97 mm (Aurora) slim while weighing just 173 grams.

Moreover, since it has a curved back and textured design, it feels great to hold and is not that slippery.

As of the moment

A new contender?
A new contender?

OPPO Reno6 Z 5G is very promising and we are enjoying our time with it so far.

The build is decent and the design is functional and sleek-looking at the same time.

Moreover, it has capable specs for a 5G-ready mid-ranger in 2021. It has a 6.4-inch AMOLED screen with 1080p resolution, In-Display fingerprint reader, 2.4GHz 7nm MediaTek Dimensity 800U 5G octa-core processor with Mali-G57 MC3 GPU, 8GB LPDDR4X RAM with extended RAM technology up to 5GB using your extra internal storage, 128GB UFS 2.1 expandable storage, and 4,130mAh battery with USB-C 30W VOOC Flash Charge 4.0.

So far, it is pretty fast and responsive for a mid-ranger. 5G works for both Globe and Smart as well.

It also has promising camera hard including a 64MP main shooter, 8MP ultra-wide camera, and a 2MP macro camera.

Moreover, it has plenty of camera features that we are excited to try. These include AI Portrait Beautification Video, Dual-view Video, Bokeh Flare Portrait, 108MP mode, and AI Palette, among others.

Now, we will be spending more time with it before we drop our full review on August 6. Also, we hope that the price is right.
