Sony to challenge Samsung in 200MP cameras?

According to a leak from the popular Weibo account Digital Chat Station, Sony is reportedly developing a 1/1.3-inch type 200MP camera sensor. The latter is expected to be featured in flagship smartphones launching in late 2025, potentially being paired with upcoming chipsets like the Dimensity 9500 or Snapdragon 8 Elite 2.

Samsung has been at the forefront when it comes to the 200MP sensor market thanks to their HP Series—including the HP1, HP2, HP3, HP5, and HP9. These sensors have been used in devices from Samsung itself, as well as by Chinese brands like Redmi, vivo, realme, and HONOR. The latest HP9 sensor, for instance, has been integrated into phones like the vivo X200 Pro and Xiaomi 15 Ultra, primarily as periscope zoom cameras.

In contrast, Sony’s rumored 200MP sensor is said to be designed for use as a main camera. Sony has previously gained recognition for its 1-inch type 50MP sensors, which have been widely adopted by different smartphone brands for their main cameras across both flagship and mid-range devices.

If the rumors prove accurate, Sony’s entry into the 200MP sensor market could bring new competition to the mobile photography space. The alleged development raises questions about how the upcoming sensor will compare to Samsung’s offerings and whether it will influence the direction of future smartphone camera technology.
