Apple may be late to foldables, but the iPhone Duo is finally here—and that alone could push the form factor into the mainstream.

Thankfully, Apple’s approach feels fresh, riding the passport‑style wide foldable wave with HUAWEI, Samsung, and Xiaomi.

The first folding screen of Apple

New CEO John Ternus unveiled the device, highlighting its compact yet wide 7.6‑inch screen (inner screen), redesigned UI, and Apple Pencil support (coming later).

The company also added a special nano‑texture finish to cut glare, along with a scratch‑resistant coating, layered glass with custom adhesives, and a titanium plate for extra durability and to minimize creases.

This provides a large canvas for viewing content, gaming, and multitasking.

When closed

When closed, it transforms into a passport-style, Ceramic Shield 2-protected 5.4-inch smartphone (outer screen), delivering 90% of the iPhone 18 Pro in a compact/pocketable design.

Both Super Retina XDR screens w/ ProMotion, Always On, and 3,000 nits peak brightness.

The two screens share the same aspect ratio, so content scales evenly for seamless visuals.

According to the company, the Duo is built to last, with innovative hardware and a precision hinge that delivers a smooth, satisfying feel every time. It comes with 100+ components, reinforced ribs, and ceramic fiber inserts for rigidity.

Different use cases

Apple also gave the Duo an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance, pairing it with a Grade 5 titanium body, a mirror‑polished finish, and a 3D‑printed hinge cover. It is available in Star White and Night Sky color options.

This is Apple’s thinnest iPhone when folded, powered by the A20 Pro chip with on‑device AI and cooled by a vapor chamber. In particular, this is a 2nm chip with a 6-core design, a 7-core GPU, and a dual 16-core Neural Engine.

Apple claims that with its Dual Battery Architecture (one on each side), the phone has up to 31 hours of video playback (inner display), 44 hours of video playback (outer display), and 24 hours of mixed use. Charging takes about 20 mins to reach 50% via fast wired chargers and 30 mins to reach 50% via wireless MagSafe/Qi2 charging.

The Duo features a 48MP Fusion main camera (24MP default) with 2x telephoto and sensor‑shift OIS, paired with a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide that supports macro shots.

Up front, it offers Center Stage plus a hidden FaceTime camera under the inner display, while video capture includes up to 4K120 Dolby Vision, Cinematic effects after capture, Audio Mix, and 4K HDR time‑lapse.

New features include Smart Take for AI auto‑capture, Duo Preview for outer display live shots, Kid Cue with Peanuts animations to engage kids, and Duo FaceTime for group calls on the outer screen.

Other features include side Touch ID, Camera Control, C2 modem, WiFi 7, 5G, Bluetooth 6, and eSIM support.

Apple also refined iOS 27 for the Duo with a side‑mounted dock and controls, dual Home Screens, and a redesigned Dynamic Island. Multitasking now supports Split View, dual app windows, and Siri AI.

Apple said that StandBy works seamlessly on both displays with new faces and deeper customization, and apps from Apple and third parties like Netflix, Zoom, and Slack are optimized for the foldable design.

Siri AI brings a more conversational, context‑aware experience synced via iCloud, and Apple Intelligence adds tools such as Spatial Reframing, Extend, Clean Up, Image Playground, SynthID support, and Safari Notify Me.
