As a brand, most Filipinos know Huawei as a smartphone maker. But, did you know that they are more than just that?

On our recent trip to Huawei's R&D and HQ in Shanghai and Shenzhen China, we learned more about the company.

Who is Huawei?

For starters, Huawei was founded in 1987 by Ren Zhengfei. At first, it was a USD 35K company that makes boards and telephone cords.

Huawei is now the world's largest telecom equipment supplier in the world!

Today, Huawei is a USD 75B business. They are now the world's LARGEST telecom equipment supplier. Yes, they are now bigger than Sweden’s Ericsson AB and Finland's Nokia Oyj. Telecommunications is more than half of their business at USD 42.5B.

Here in the Philippines, Huawei is a partner of both Smart and Globe. In late 2019 or early 2020, Smart and Globe plan to start the rollout of Huawei's 5G technology in the country.

Aside from the telecommunication business, Huawei also has a Consumer Business group. It includes the smartphones, tablets, pc, and accessories business that's worth USD 26.3B.

As of writing, Huawei is the biggest smartphone maker in China. In the world, they are currently ranked as the 3rd largest behind Apple and Samsung. Last mid-2017, they even managed to momentarily beat Apple for the number 2 spot.

Recently, Huawei surprised the world when they launched the Huawei P20 Pro, the world's first smartphone in the world with a triple Leica camera setup.

As expected, the said device is currently the best photography phone in the world according to DxOMark lab test and our own review here at GIZGUIDE.


They also have several innovations recently like the GPU Turbo tech, SuperCharge fast charging solution, and their own AI-assisted HiSilicon Kirin 970 chipset.

Huawei is also preparing to launch its own 5G devices by next year.

Huawei is the world's 3rd largest tablet maker as well.

Huawei also has USD 5B worth of Enterprise business. It covers the likes of Software-Defined Networking (SDN), Big Data, and the Internet of Things (IoT).

How did they do it?

According to Huawei, the reasons behind their success are they are privately held and focused. As a brand, Huawei also claimed that they are a dreamer and a doer at the same time too.

They are an employee-owned company that believes in the power of collaborative networks. They are also rotating their CEO every six months to keep the ideas of the company fresh.

In total, Huawei has over 180,000 employees that work globally.

Huawei also believes in the power of R&D (research and development) for long-term growth.

As a matter of fact, they spent USD 60.4B in R&D for the past 10 years. It is equivalent to 10 percent of their sales revenue each year.


Last 2017, they made it to the top 10 companies who invested most on R&D in the world at number 6.

In comparison, Huawei's R&D expenditure of EUR 10.4B is bigger than Apple's EUR 9.5B.

In total, Huawei has 14 dedicated R&D facilities and 36 joint innovation centers globally. They also have 80,000 employees or 45 percent of their workforce assigned in research and development.

Huawei also hired some of the best global talents and partnered with some of the best brands in the world.

Those brands include Microsoft, Intel, Google, Amazon, Audi, ARM, Leica, Porsche Design, Daydream, Dolby, Pantone, and more.

Huawei has taken the lead in the development of 5G globally, they have their own processor company (HiSilicon, Kirin)

As expected, Huawei also has a commitment to quality. The company claimed that the reliability facility that we visited boasts one of the most stringent quality control in the world.

All of the above-mentioned traits of Huawei mean that they really care about their customers by providing them with some of the best or better products and solutions.

As a result, Huawei doesn't rely too much on celebrity endorsers. Huawei empowered its consumers to be their own brand ambassadors.

Endless exciting possibilities! As a brand, Huawei aims to be an iconic global tech company. 

For consumers like us, we are sure that they will continue to create consumer-centric products and solutions that will help in improving our lives today and tomorrow.
